Clau de la Roche 2022
Grown by Pierre Ménard, this Sauvignon Blanc from the old vines of Clos de La Roche in Faye d'Anjou.
The old vines of Clos de La Roche are among the first arrivals of this grape variety in Anjou in the early 1960s and were planted on a schist hilltop. This unusual terroir for a Loire Sauvignon Blanc erases the expression of the grape variety and instead expresses the structure of the schists, almost like a Chenin.
Harvested manually, the grapes undergo gentle pneumatic pressing, fermentation, and aging in barrels, stoneware jars, and vats.
The "Clau de la Roche" selection comes exclusively from the oldest Sauvignon Blancs, which performed particularly well this year, aged in one barrel and one stoneware jar.
The word "Clau" is used instead of "Clos" because the term Clos is forbidden for wines outside the appellation, which a pure Sauvignon in Anjou cannot claim, and because Clos de la Roche is also a grand cru of Burgundy.
This is a medium bodied natural white wine.
